Proposed Site: The site selected is in the western suburbs of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The site is located on an arterial road connecting two Municipal ward boundaries namely Charkop (RS) and Gorai (RC).
Issues at the Site: The Plot proposed for a public toilet and social interventions is a triangular shaped plot. The west and east sides of the plot are roads, the northern face are the mangroves and the rivulet/Nallah and the south is a road junction. However, due to the slums in the periphery with a population of approximately 300-400 slum dwellers and no other human interventions around the plot has resulted into continuous dumping of heaps of garbage in the water body thus forming a garbage shore on its two sides. Due to lack of sanitation facilities and proper public toilets, the plot peripheries are used for defecating in the open by the slum Dwellers and people passing by the road.
Issues with the Public Toilets Though there have been efforts in India by the government schemes like ‘Swacha Bharat Abhiyan’ to improve the public health and sanitation facilities, The facilities created have many issues which the Public come across in their day to day lives. The facilities are generally located near slum Pockets / on highways. The issues & solutions related with the current scenario of Public Toilets are as follows.
